Our project : to sponsor GENA !

GENAis a few month old orphan bear cub. It is unfortunate that he is one of the too numerous victims of the winter den hunt, a cruel practice taking place in Russia: it consists in frightening the bear to flush it out from its hibernation then shooting him when he appears outside. Although the hunting of female bears with cubs is illegal in the country, hunters do not hesitate to kill females condemning thousands of orphan bear cubs to death..
GENAis one of these orphans… but a rescued one! Indeed, recently, he has been welcomed by the IFAW team in its Bear Rescue Center, located in the Tver region, in Russia. Gena has to learn first to become a bear to be successfully reintroduced in its natural habitat.
However, the road is long. The programme of reintroduction is costly. The association funds and supports the reintroduction of each bear cub as it does not receive any subvention from the State! You are the one who can help IFAW to carry out its mission.

To give GENA a chance to return into the wild, please involve your relations to help that bear cub !

An exceptional rescue centre in Russia !

Established in 1995, the IFAW orphan Bear Rescue Center is located in the village of Bubonitsy, in Russia. It is headed by an eminent brown bear specialist, Professor Pazhetnov, who brought to life a programme of reintroduction which is internationally renowned.

It is a unique center which guarantees rehabilitation to orphan bear cubs. Since it has been established, more than 120 of them have been returned to the wild thanks to IFAW work.

The rehabilitation programme for each animal in the center is a long lasting process: many months of work. The most important for IFAW is to give them the needed skills to become independent when they are released out of the center of Bubonitsy.
Each reintroduced animal is equipped with a radio collar enabling the IFAW team to check that the rehabilitation is successful.

The story of GENA

The mother of GENA is dead. When hibernating, hunters flushed her out of the den. Going outside has been fatal to her… hunters did not hesitate to shoot her in cold blood leaving GENA alone.

GENA was found roaming. After being placed at the police station, he has been welcomed by the IFAW team of experts. Nevertheless, every time a new bear cub arrives, the first days are critical.  Will he survive after the distress he has to face? Only time gives the answer…but good cares as well!

It is lucky that GENA survived. He can start the programme of rehabilitation to learn becoming an independent free bear, what would have been transmitted by his mother.
